Integrity - Doing what is right. And what exactly would that be?
So here we are, my first official blog post!
It will be short and sweet and shall act as an introduction into a new series of writings I have been deeply inspired to delve into.
Initially my intention was to discuss a quote regarding love. I however made the error of erroneously attributing the quote to Mark Anthony the Cesar and not the poet.
As such I have a perfect opportunity to discuss a quote regarding Integrity. An inadvertent introduction into a discussion of principles, thoughts and the experiences that might shape them. The series is yet to be blessed with a name. When the time is right, you will know.
Integrity seems to be this airy fairy concept thrown around during ethical discussions or built into slogans. It is however admittedly a rather subjective concept. Who defines what integrity truly is? One's family, friends, society, culture, religion?
My opinion on the matter is quite simple. Integrity is unique to each one of us. We are fickle beings. Yet, we are products of our environments. Such as a rill that shapes a dry river bed, our beliefs are shaped by our environments. Over time a rill may turn into a canyon, or it may divert into another direction. Time might appear to be the greatest shaper of integrity. Time is another fickle concept and is way to broad a topic to be discussed on day one. Back to integrity.
"Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching" - C.S Lewis.
C.S Lewis defines integrity as the right thing. That is however a loaded statement. What is the right thing? It is highly possible that my definition of right and wrong differs to my neighbor. In fact I would go so far as to argue it is highly probable and not just possible. We are driven by different codes, since we are driven by different interactions, experiences and histories.
As such I would like to explore my code. Which is an extension and driver of my integrity. It could be argued that your code, which you have even if it is not written down, is the driver of your integrity. Our codes may overlap, they might rhyme. They are however unique to every single one of us. Our codes are an extension of our souls, our core being and our views on this strange adventure we have labeled life. I trust you will enjoy the dive into mine.
Stay tuned for more.
Sincerely,
S
